Step Parenting lessons from the Kardashians?! (view video)

The famous Olympian and best selling author, Bruce Jenner, is thriving in his third marriage to Kris Kardashian. Between Bruce and Kris, they have ten children in their blended family ranging in age from 11 to 35.
You may have seen their "reality" TV show and are wondering, "With antics like they demonstrate on their show, what possible good advice could the Jenners have?"
Fair enough.
Consider this:
- Statistically, 70% (that's 7 out of 10) blended families eventually fail.
- The Jenners have beat the odds and stuck together for 17 years.
Isn't it possible that they have learned a little along the way about what works and what does not in blended families?
Blending their family was initially a challenge and here are some of the lessons Bruce and Kris learned through real-life experiences:
1. "As a parent, there are certain rules you play by. There's another set as a stepparent. You've got to realize there are things you can do and things you can't."
2. "Take the first years to define your position and learn how to play the game". In other words, step back, observe and slowly, as you build mutual trust, begin to define your role.
3. "Figure out how to back off but be there for the kids when they need you". This speaks to the delicate balance of boundaries that is so important in any family.
4. "Consistency means harmony."
5. "Encourage kids to find something in life to get excited about when they wake up in the morning and develop the work ethic of a champion by 'working hard to be good'. Then stand back and smile".
6. Kris' advice to parents as partners in a busy household, "Be organized, stay focused, have a good sense of humor, and by all means know when it's time to take a romantic getaway with your husband."
Action Step
If any of these recommendations spark a question for you in terms of your blended family, we invite you to start thinking of a question for Bruce and Kris to answer on May 15th, 2008, when they are interviewed for our www.BlendedFamilyExperts.com "Ask the Expert" audio series. By submitting your question, you will also be invited to join the interview at no charge (other than the long distance fees).
